After seeing The Golden Spurtle at the Australian Film Festival, a couple of Pearl Beach residents were hit with inspiration. The similarities between the village of Carrbridge, Scotland, where the World Porridge Making Competition is held every year, and the sleepy seaside village of Pearl Beach are striking — from the population demographics, to the much-loved community hall at the heart of village life, and the beloved local music groups. But could this quaint competition and celebration of porridge really be recreated for Aussie shores?
Once this far-fetched idea was set into motion, it suddenly took on a life of its own — with food gurus, sponsors and business partners jumping at the chance to be a part of this unconventional and eccentric event.
And so the Pearly Spurtle – Festival of Porridge was born — a celebration of oats, creativity, laughter and community, inspired by the magic of a small Scottish village and reimagined for the shores of Pearl Beach. In it’s first year, we hope this event will grow and develop as others embrace the potential that lies in a passionate group of people, and in a humble bowl of oats.
